conducted rx sensitivity
Try to find harmonic relationships between the frequencies used in your design. I once spent weeks finding the reason for a few bad RX channels and it turned out that 9 x one LO minus 11 x another LO was just our 2nd IF frequency...

Connecting that dektop drive to the laptop will probably work, I have done it vice versa some day (slim DVD to a desktop). If it will be convenient is a different question.
You could also put a DVD+R into a 486 but you would just be able to use it as a CD-ROM drive... sounds like a dead idea to me.
Well, you can write books about this subject.
The main point is that with two antennas spaced more than x wavelengths apart, the probability that either one of them momentarily has a better signal is higher as you say yourself. The "gain" can be expressed in BER, or in some kind of equivalent...
nmos linear power supply
Does it _have_ to be an integrated regulator? Why can't you use a few external components like a beefy PNP transistor to literally take the heat?

tl494 car smps
Yep, a PC power supply gives you the most critical (or hard to find) components: the magnetics for the transformer. Also the schottky diodes are often usable.
For the rest you just need some low ESR caps, an SG3525 or something like that, and two low RDSon high current (but low...
tl497 application note
If you want to keep it really simple, use the TL497. You can build simple switchers with that chip, an inductor, a diode, some caps and a few resistors. Go to ti.com and dl the data sheets and application notes.

A balun at RF frequencies is best done by passive means, like a toroid transformer. Just search for "antenna balun" on googly, I'm sure you get a lot of hits.
You can also buy an ARRL book or an ARRL antenna book. They explain this in detail.

Re: Hacking cmputer's PSU
All the comments above are valid. I have had a PC in my car in a VERY well designed case with all the possible precautions for vibration and temperature changes, as well did I use the best components available.
The PSU was a normal ATX brick modified for 12V, that can...
Re: Seno developer disposal
Most countries also have a system for disposing of hazardous chemicals in an environmental acceptable manner. There may even be a monthly collection round or something for paint leftovers, waste engine oil, sulphated car batteries and other fun stuff. Worth checking...
Re: GSM modem
I have used both the Nokia 30 and Siemens TC35i. Both are very easy to use and you got them up and running with a microcontroller app in a few hours. Just send commands in Hayes AT format, and off you go.
That is, assuming you don't want to modulate and demodulate the GMSK of the...
Re: about the vco
A very wise advice. Go for the commercial VCO.
PS about the phones, even when they are sold with the tens of millions, the VCO is always bought.
Cheaper, better, faster, easier, and most of all: controllable.

Re: DC/AC converter
What are the requirements? Square wave ok? Or does it have to be sine wave? Requirements for stability? Efficiency? Weight? Start-up current? Etc.

Re: Wich PCB Tool is better?
Elektor uses (used to use?) Ultiboard. That's what I have been using too, for at least 10 years.
Actually, it's stability is quesionable and usability isn't perhaps the greatest, but I have it in my fingers and I guess I'll stick with it until there is no...
