Hi,

I have XUPV2P board with Virtex2 Pro chip on it.

i want to use memory.

i can buy the following modules:

1.RAM PQI 256MB DDR PC3200 - 200/266/333/400 MHz
2.RAM Super Talent D27PB12C 512Mb DDR PC2700 - 266/333 MHz

can these modules be used with my board?
here is what Xilinx recommends:

however there is application note XAPP549 which shows how to interface DDR2 SDRAM to Virtex2 Pro devices..

But..the problem is DDR2 SDRAM is 240-pin module, while the DDR SDRAM is 184-pin module..

The XUPV2P board is equipped with 184-pin DIMM module that provides access up to 2GB DDR SDRAM.

now the question is: Can i use above mentioned DDR SDRAM modules with PC3200 and PC2700? and with the specified frequencies?

(as i think...if Xilinx has application note XAPP549 which connects DDR2 to Virtex@ Pro chip... then why not to connect the DDR with the same speed to Virtex2Pro, isnt it?)

it is nice to hear... but i also know that i can use DDR memory with it!

i am asking can i use PC3200 or Pc2700 DDR SDRAM? THAT IS THE QUESTION...

Hi,

I think you are confused by the following two items

1.RAM PQI 256MB DDR PC3200 - 200/266/333/400 MHz
2.RAM Super Talent D27PB12C 512Mb DDR PC2700 - 266/333 MHz

In fact, PC3200 means that it is running at 200MHZ ONLY. nothing to do with 266/333/400

PC2700 means that it is running at 166MHZ ONLY. nothing to do with 266/333mhz

For more timing margin, you probably need pc2700; but you have to check XUPV2P user guide.

well, yes.

PC3200 = (200MHz x 2 x 64) / 8

So...for the PC3200 the memory bus clock must be 200MHz...

manuals says i can use PC2100... that is around 133MHz bus clock... but there is as i said in first post of this thread, an application which uses DDR2 with Virtex2Pro chip... so...does it mean i can also use 184-pin DDR SDRAM PC3200 DIMM module with XUPV2P board?

can i use DCM to output 200MHz?

(the AJ15 pin has system clock of 100MHz)

I think it is ok to use pc3200 DDR if pc3200 DDR2 is working on your board. According to my experience, DDR2 can work in harsher scenarios than DDR. The former needs less power, supporting higher frequency. All these thing make DDR2 more difficult to meet the timing closure than DDR. So, if DDR2 is supported by your board, DDR DIMM should be fine.


You must use DCM to double input clock and get 200MHz.

use of ddrsdram in virtex2pro

well, i have just bought the following DUAL rank DDR SDRAM DIMM:

TwinMOS 512mb, PC3200 CL3
model: M2GAJ16A-TT

created the test design in Base SYstem Builder, added only UART and DDR512 dual rank memory peripherals, changed the CAS Latency to 3 in the EDK of the DDR 512 IP core... synthesized in EDK, and downloaded to board.

the hyperterminal showed that the memory test application is Passed!

so the above module worked on this board, though it was not recommended on the main page of XUP board on Xilinx website..
