xilinx jtag cable

Hi FPGA folks

I have purchased the XtremeDSP Starter Platform – Spartan-3A DSP 1800A Edition but I didn't order any download cables along with it. I would like to know my options for downloading the bitfile to the FPGA ? .. can I use a normal JTAG cable with one terminal being of USB interface (to be connected to the PC) and the other terminal being of FlyLeads (to be connected to the board) ? .. if so, what are FlyLead configuration that I should be using ?

I would also like to know if this will also work with ChipScope or not.

Thanks in advance.

I want an answer too

My friends used the normal printer cables(jtag-usb) for DSP and it worked, I think it will work with FPGA as well.

Is there a printer cable that's JTAG-USB !!!!!!! .. why do you need JTAG with the printer ?? .. I guess you are mistaken .. the printer cable is USB-USB ..

Hi omara007

if your board is XtremeDSP Starter Platform – Spartan-3A DSP 1800A Edition.

you can connect your JTAG to J4.

Can I use a normal general JTAG cable ? .. or should I be using Xilinx specific JTAG Downloaders ?

if dsp C6416 uses usb-usb then you are right , but if it uses a jtag usb , than I am right.
I didn't try my self as mentioned, you won't lose any thing by asking.

What is dsp C6416?
By the way, my FPGA kit is only configured through JTAG .. hence, I can't use USB-USB even if I have it.

c6416 is a DSP kit.

i don't understand about general JTAG cable. but if you need to connect or debug xilinx FPGA you need a xilinx Cable 3(open sch.) or xilinx Cable 4 (buy from xilinx).

I meant any JTAG-USB cable that's not specifically one of the Xilinx downloaders ..
I have been using one JTAG downloader for configuring lattice FPGA in my previous company .. I was wonder if this works

ok, I understand your question.

I think JTAG cable for lattice can't compatible with xilinx, but i never try.

by the way if you try that , please show your result.

Hi omara007,

I attach a xilinx's jtag schematic in this post . So you can compare with your lattice's jtag schematic.

Thanks BuBEE ..
I just can't understand why there are hundreds of different JTAG cables .. each works for some specific DSP/uC/FPGA/CPLD family .. while JTAG itself is a standard !!
