wireless power transfer

i want to transfer about 5 watt power to a remote location 5 inch away for a home lighting device(5watt 12 v led bulb) using wireless power transfer can anyone suggest me how can i do it ? can i use the air core transformer in which the transmitter is the primary winding and the receiver is the secondary winding of the transformer?does anyone know what is the maximum separation between 2 cores of an air core transformer and the relevant formulas? can anyone suggest me any links for this (wireless power transfer)

wireless power transmission

Hey this is very nice idea
possibley you can do it, in a way U R thinking!!!
I have another idea try Microwave transmission and then concentrate using parabolic dish antenna to get the power I had never tried but I have seen once a documentry on the discovery channel about this topic.
best luck..... 8)

hi,
i dont have any experience on this matter but you can get some idea-information from contactless card reader/writer system...receiver module has a coil...internal electronics uses energy as a power supply which produced on this coil by magnetic field...your system will be larger but basicaly the same. Hope this helps.,Regards.

with google "contactless battey" you can find more application and usefull notice, many charger battery are contactless system

The problem depend on location of transmit point and receive point . If you can arrange to make transmit coil and receive coil on same plane , you can using the frequency about 10MHz and with the distance 5 inch you need about 50W at transmitter to get 5W at receiver coil

another method

5W is a lot of power to transfer. You should work on your circuit to reduce the required power which will make the transfer system more realizable.

Re: wireless power transfer

if you can put the end receiving the power inside many turns of wire there can be a big air gap and the magnetic field wil still be transfered accross to the secondary this would require the secondary to be in the middle of the primpary and a ferite core (rod) which the primary is wound on. Also you may need a high frequency (50kHz +) however interwinding capacitance on your primary will be difficult to keep low enough. Just a suggestion to make your life easy, use wires.

Re: wireless power transfer

I suggest You always use Cyllindrical cores as that can be seen in the transformer One primary and other secondary duly insulated with apoxy .Now you can easily slide the one core on other .

Hope it helps

Re: wireless power transfer

5W across that distance is definitely near to insanity.... imagine the loss. The most i've achieved was for 1.4W across 3mm for a contactless battery charger.

Even with that, the component used is already discontinued! Nevertheless, do hope to share my experience and hopefully there's somebody who can replicate such wireless tansfer into a standard module for me to continue using!

Good luck!

krag ,Over a distance of 5 inches is not impossible ? I think he should use high frequency cycles between the cores and not that is used in the conventional transformers ..

Re: wireless power transfer

If the load is not ON continuously you could design in a supercap or battery at the load and transfer a smaller amount of power continuously (like a battery charger).

safety first

The famous photo above is a double exposure. Once with Telsa in the chair and once with the arcs and no Telsa.

This should remind everyone that safety is the first concern. Even low voltages with high current capability can be dangerous. Do not wear metal jewelry around such circuits.

Re: wireless power transfer

A magetic field is a bad solution for your need .. Because the field becomes less intensive wih distance ..
Have you thought in a ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD INSTEAD ?

A couple o MATCHED ANTENNAS .. One very directional . In order to
concentrate all the energy in a small area !

eltonjohn , What are you talking about ? How can you transfer 5W power
via Electromagnetic spectrum ?

Re: wireless power transfer

Hi trishool :

This ha already been done !..

I saw one time lamps with no wiring !.. The way they did it is by concentrating RF fields wih a very directional antenna!.
In any case a microwave device !
I beleive that the lamps were also higher wattage than 5W

It was also suggestested this method for collecting energy in the space in beeminig back to earth!

Re: wireless power transfer

HI WAPPA_BANGA :

I discoverd plenty of sites with RF solution por lighting

this approach is very good though trough a magnetic coupling

**broken link removed**

i think that is a great subject !

good luck

Re: wireless power transfer

I tried contacting Nebix through email but no reply from them. anybody had used such solution before or have sources to provide?

Most commercialised contactless power transfer are from the japanese (panasonic, tdk, etc) while the most recent are splashpower..... all in the battery charging aspects.

should there be any party who can engineer something close by replicating the ferrite cores and copper windings etc.... PLS CONTACT ME! I have some modules left in stock and am looking to purchase more ;)
