Why the MOS technologies are called 0.5µm and 1.5µm respectively ?

When using Mosis AMIS 0.5µm Techology :
λ value is 0.3µm,
minimun gate length is 2λ=0.6µm

When using Mosis AMIS 1.5 Technology :
λ value is 0.6µm,
minimun gate length is 2λ=1.2µm

So, why the technologies are called 0.5µm and 1.5µm respectively ?

as for as i studied in bachelor degree...the FEATURE SIZE defines the technology...so the mentioned values mut be FEATURE SIZE..
sorry, that i don't remember exact definition of FEATURE SIZE!!
