hi guys
just wanted to know why the 555 timer is called a 555 timer. do the three 5's have any importance as such?

555 Timer

its just the name like 74hc00 ...
the dble timer chip is 556

Re: 555 Timer

Yes, The name of 555 came from the three 5kOhms resistors at its input!
important or not, it's not clear as they're a part in the IC structure! and according to them it works !

I hope that helps
ahmad,

Re: 555 Timer

the 555 name came from the fact that it has three 5k resistors in it's construction. to make a potential divider network.

Re: 555 Timer

Yeah, exactly, its name comes from its 3 resistors of 5kOhm. The story about 555 history told that when its original designers from Signetics wanted to choose its name, they just realized that its unique feature is those 3 resistors, and so its name is 555.

Sometimes, there is a story about device's number, as 555 for example, and it is also the very famous IC which has been alive for 4 decades, from early 1970's.

One another famous IC also, everyone knows, that is 741, but I never heard about its name story.
