Why separate "Vs" and "Vss" at pin no. 8 and 16 respectively are used in L293D?

I refers to the datasheet of L293D (STMicroelectronics) and it was found that separate "Vs" and "Vss" at pin no. 8 and 16 respectively are used but it was not mentioned that why we are doing so?

Have a look at the TI data sheet www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/l293d.pdf

The SGS terminology is bad as Vss normally means 0V or GND!

Pin 16 is the logic supply, 5V for example. Pin 8 is the motor supply - see figure 3 of the TI data sheet.
