Why is FIR filter called Linear phase filter?

Re: question

karthikkrish.84,
FIR and Linear phase are not synonymous. An FIR filter can be designed to have the linear phase property by enforcing certain symmetry rules on the coefficients. For example, for an odd order filter, if the coefficient values are symetrical with respect to the center coefficient, the filter will have the linear phase property. FIR filters are not necesarily linear phase. Linear phase means that the phase is equal to a constant times the frequency in the pasband.
