Why internet speed is not specified in baud rate?

The internet speed is usually specified in bits per second, (Mbps, Kbps, etc). Since, the data is digital form, why baud rate is not used?
 

Baud rate is channel information rate = bit rate/number of bits mapped to one symbol.
if bits are mapped to symbols as 1:1 then baud rate = bit rate and there is no need to use baud unless you favour it.

internet may use QAM but the focus is on bits.
