Why infrared transmitters cannot be used for long time ?

infrared

i have heard that infrared transmitters and receivers and transmitters cannot be used for longtime continuously can someone tell me what is the limitation factor in their usage

LED emitters degrade with temperature and time. If you put less than the maximum current through them they will last longer.

due to short wavelength cant useful for long distance transmission .
