why CML is know as current mode logic

the CML is known as current mode logic buffers.
what is the reason behind to say this as current mode logic as this the the diff amp with the passive resistive load
 

I don't really know the history behind the name, but the VOH=Vcc and VOL=(tail current)*(load resistor). So the voltage swing is set by the current of the gate. Add an emitter follower then it is called ECL.

cause it works by steering a current source
 

because in cml current switching takes place rather than voltage switching
