question on VIA

Hi,

Which VIA is good via with big dia or via with small dia .What are adv & disadv.

Thanks & Regards,
tramp.

Re: question on VIA

Generally you want low inductance so a large surface area is desierable. Multiple small vias typically will work better than 1 large via since the total surface area will be greater.

Re: question on VIA

I don't agree with the previous forumer.

Depending the PCB track/trace you are using. You use vias that are large enough for many reasons:
1. For thru-hole components, if you use any.
2. Mainly connecting top to bottom sides of the PCB. Then if it is power and ground, then these vias are usually large ones with inner diameter (30/40mil) and outer diameter (80mil). If it is signal via, inner diameter (30/40mil), outer diameter (50mil). The larger the vias, the greater the parasitic capacitors between top and bottom via pads, but lower resistance, thus favour power and ground. These parasitic capacitors are inherent decoupling capacitors, which smooth fluctuation in supply rails, as well as providing a return path for non-ideal return current.

1000mil = 1 inch

Thanks skyhigh for ur explanation.but if lets say via which is used for 2GHz signal
does larger dia via will help?

question on VIA

i think ebalboni is talking the via in layout design & SkyHigh is talking abt the one used in pcb design.

plz conform
