which chip i should go for?

does following chips are ok

XC9536xl-10PC44C(3.3)
or XC9536-15PC44C(5V)

you can buy evaluation board for xilinx SPRATAN 3 chip that is a cheap FPGA.

perhaps you needn't real hardware,

for study cpld chip programming,

ISE platform and some simulator such as modelsim are sufficient.
