The above textbooks are good for gate-level "digital design" where you don't have to know much about the underlying electronics. Your original post asked for "digital electronics" and I take that to mean transistor-level digital electronics. For example, the detailed study of how a TTL or CMOS gate is implemented. Below are my recommendations, look for the new version if they exist. These cover things like RTL (resistor transistor logic), DTL (diode transistor logic) and TTL (transistor transistor logic). I don't know if they cover much CMOS

J. Millman & C.C. Halkias
"Integrated Electronics, Analog and Digital Circuits"
McGraw-Hill, 1972

D.A. Hodges

For a more fresh and modern treatment, I would suggest

Anant Agarwal & Jeffrey Lang
"Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits"
Morgan Kaufmann, 2005.
