what's the practical use of hilbert transform?

why use hilbert transform

the hilbert transform only shift the negative frequency signal's phase +90 degree and positve frequency signal's phase -90 degree,but there is no negative frequency in reality,so ,what's the practical use of hilbert transform?

hilbert transform of a single sine cycle

Here is a paragraph snipped from MATLAB Help:
"The Hilbert transform is useful in calculating instantaneous attributes of a time series, especially the amplitude and frequency. The instantaneous amplitude is the amplitude of the complex Hilbert transform; the instantaneous frequency is the time rate of change of the instantaneous phase angle. For a pure sinusoid, the instantaneous amplitude and frequency are constant. The instantaneous phase, however, is a sawtooth, reflecting the way in which the local phase angle varies linearly over a single cycle. For mixtures of sinusoids, the attributes are short term, or local, averages spanning no more than two or three points."

Positive and negative frequencies seem very real to me. For example, when I see a wheel spinning counter-clockwise at 600 RPM, I consider that to be +10 Hz. If it spins clockwise, that's -10 Hz. More info:

use of hilbert tranforms

Correct me if I am wrong: I think the hilbert transform is a tool for analysis in digital communication, rather than a "practical" tool. Similar to the concept of channel capacity. It allows you find what is the limit of the perofrmance of your system or helps to compare systems, but it is not used to build anything.

use of hilbert transform

a hilbert transformer is one which multiplies the input with a 'j' in the frequency domain. therefore it is used as a 90 deg phase shifter or in short a differentiator. thus we can use them wherever a differentiator is needed. however, it is very difficult to build one. in quadrature amplitude multiplexing, costas receivers and quite a few applications we need to use a 90 deg phase shifter.

Hilbert transform can be used to generate digital IQ modulation, and if used in combination with DDS and a high speed DAC, one can generate an IF directly out of the DAC without a mixer. Digital IQ provides minimal I-Q imbalance and DC offset, thus minimizes image level and LO leakage at IF. Hope this HELPs.
