start of timer project

I know basic electronics from years ago, and now want to design a timer that has several settings.

What I'm trying to design is a timer that has several settings for off time (say 1 day, 2 days, 4 days and 1 week), and a selectable on period (a couple of seconds to a few minutes).

What is the best way to get started? Should I be thinking with 555's ( but I don't think I can get the days of off time with these), or should I be thinking of using programmable chips?

I just need a bit of help to get started...

Re: start of timer project

555 is not designed for this application.
All what you need is a microcontroller controlled real time clock ..

... and you 'll get more accurate time since the crystal is not drifting with time as a capacitor or a resistor! Microcontroler is the best solution! Low circuitry, a bit of programming and you have your time counter!
