What's a FM transmitter and how to design it?

We are required to design an FM transmitter. Can anyone explain further what it is. its use and its parts. And its simpliest schematic diagram? Just for further clarization. Thank you..

FM Transmitter transmits FM signals for in-depth theory please see:

To design a FM transmitter, look for a one-chip solution Maxim-ic has MAX2606 for this purpose IIRC.

Search Maxim for appnote and simple schematic.
