what're pal,gal,pld,spld,cpld,peel,fpga and asic?

Hi friends,
what're pal,gal,pld,spld,cpld,peel,fpga and asic? how can i program them, where to use them? what's the difference among them?

pal = gal = pld = in same level but don't same logic design in inside
cpld = next movement of pld ... look at altera search using elektroda
fpga = like cpld but more cool ... look at altera and xilinx site or you can search using elektroda
asic = is most using for indrustrial because the cost is cheaper ... take alook at elektroda search

As a newer in the field, should choose to use Altera or Xilinx ICs?
Does it matter for my later work on the IC design field?
