What you think about Hi-tech 8051 compilel ?
 

does it work? ... yes
small code ....... yes
windows ? ........ no

the supplied editor is ok, use mplab if you like wind@#"%&*

You also have to look at the Optimizations done by that compiler. It is amzing how good compilers optimize the code generated by C . I have sometimes seen a code tighter than assembly.
