What woll happen if a transistor is operating in the saturated region?.

Irrespective of what type of transistor it is, saturation implies current saturation. In a FET, the drain/channel current saturates making it independant (to the first order) of the drain-source voltage. In a BJT, saturation region is in which both the junctions are forward biased thereby saturating the collector current.

By the way, saturation does not necessarily mean anything bad. For example, when we use the MOSFET as a switch (for example in a dc dc converter), the switch ON condition corresponds to a saturated transistor. The switch OFF condition corresponds to a transistor operating in cutoff region.

In a magnetic core, saturation might mean something bad. This refers to the fact that increase in the magnetic core current is not increasing the magnetic flux density. So if you keep increasing the current you will increase the losses in the core.

You can use transistor as a switch on cut-off and saturation regions.Cut-off is off position and saturation is on.

Saturation means both junctions are forward biased in a BJT and in FET the drain current becomes independent of the gate voltage

if the transistor worked in saturation or cutoff region it will dissipate less power than working in linear region . It is a huge benefit for the transistor as it will works longer life time

if transistor goes to saturation ,it will take time to bring it out of saturation..which will lead to increase in propagation delay

In saturation region, the relation existing between Ic and Ib will change as


Ic>CURRENT GAIN(BETA)/Ib

If you meant saturation for CMOS transistor, then the gain produced of that transistor will be constants as the current is constant.

If you meant saturation for BJT transistor, then the gain produced of that transisitor will be not constants as the current is not constant. BJT has to be in linear region in order to produce constant gain.

in my point of view, this is wrong concept, b/c in saturation transistor takes a lot of power, and battery life decreases..in cut-off region, it is right that battery life will increase...

so, SATURATION decreases battery life..and
SATURATION is not a bad thing in SWITCHES..but
it is very bad thing in AMPLIFIERS..
