What physical antennas to use for building Smart system?

Antenna Selection

Can anybody help me that what type of physical antennas should I use to build a Smart Antenna system. It may λ/2 dipole, Microstrip (fix) antenna array, etc.
Kindly help me in detail. Also it does not depend upon any type of system, just generally give me the idea.
