what is the importance of ESD?

To protect the IC from be damaged by static. It is very common that static happens when the IC is been packaged or touched by persons.

Its called silent killer because your IC won't work and you might not know that it has been ESD damaged.

Hi,
ESD or Electro Static Discharge can destroy ic chip if you are holding it with your barehand or not grounding it. ESD can produce up to >kilovolt.

Regards

actually it is due to discharging of the RC combination formed in our body and this is capable of destroying MOSFETs gate and hence it is capable of impairing them
it is deadly to any device that cannot withstand discharge...
see art of electronics for more details and picture...
