serial over Lan

hi

what is the hardware requirement for serian over Lan?
with intel AMT? and with IPMI? on a computer motherboard.

does the ethernet phy/controller need to have a serial port interface to connect to the super IO? how does the serial port get to the ethernet link?

Re: serial over Lan

I am also trying to learn about it.
I guess it is the Ethernet transceiver which convert
the serial data to Ethernet physical signalling.
Some other Ethernet IC allows data in UART, I2C, SPI

serial over Lan

hi
U can make it by a ethernet chipset like "rtl8019" or " iim7010" or "w3100" or "w3150" with a AVR or 8051 micro controller & on the other part use other interface of that micro like uart I2C & SPI

be success

Re: serial over Lan

Hi.

The easiest, fastest and chipest way is an Xport serial to ethernet device from lantronics. It can be easily purchased for example at Farnell.

Buco.

serial over Lan

Yes, quite right. The original question is however referring to something different. It's a feature of Intel PC chipsets and respective BIOS, that allow a LAN maintenance terminal connection to a PC without driver software or specific support by a loaded operation system. I must admit, that I first heard of it by this question.
