What is the difference between SMPS regulator and LDO regulator?

Hi,

Which factors makes SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) regulator to use mostly in power supply circuits than LDO (Low Drop Out) regulators?
What are the advantages of SMPS regulators and what are the limitations of the LDO regulators?

Read the threads in the box below: "similar threads".

It seems you like to compare different things.
SMPS... Opposite = linear regulator
LDO... Opposite = non low dropout = a standard (linear) regulator. But nobody says a "high dropout".

Theoretically an SMPS (step down = buck) can be "low dropout", too.

SMPS have high efficiency(95%), high reliable and low heat dissipation, Isolation available
LDOs are less efficiency(80%) high heat dissipation

Because of high efficiency most of the power supply's are SMPS.
 

Linear regulators are a great choice for powering very low powered devices or applications where the difference between the input and output is small. Switching regulators on the other hand are highly efficient and available as modular chips which are compact and reliable.
