In 2D simulation planar structures such as microstrip structures can be analyzed but in 3D simulation both planar and nonplanar structures such as waveguides, Horn antennas,.. can be analyzed. in later the meshing is based on 3D segments
In 2D Field Solver it Computes Fields (say currents) in a Cross-section (X-Y plane)
so only meant for planar structures takes less computational effort (Memory & Time)
In 3D Field Solver it Computes 3D Fields in all directions and Currents Surrounding/On Arbitrary 3D Objects
good for Waveguides, etc but takes lot of computational effort (Memory & Time)
So people try to use 2.5D or 3D Planar Field Solvers to quickly & acceptable accuracy analysis
where it can handle Multilayer dielectrics & Vias
such solver examples are Sonnet em, Agilent Momentum, AWR AXIEM, Zeland IE3D, etc
