I can understand the meaning of the underlined sentences. Can anyone explain the whole meaning of this paragraph?

What is the meaning of snake around here??
 

A skinny control wire slithering around the path of least visibility to the destination control solenoid instead of a lot more copper wire carrying the power in the shortest reasonable path written a long time ago by a poetic engineer. But wait, plumbers use snakes too.
