What is MIMO channel?

I know what MIMO is. It is something that uses multiple input and multiple output in the system.

However I am not clear what MIMO channel is. When I look for matlab code and see "mimo channel" code, Does it mean....that channel using Space time block coding/spatial multiplexing in the code or what?

And Can you answer my another question if you can please..
When you talk about mimo channel do you mean that you apply Space time block code or spatial multiplexing in the channel?
