What is a totem pole output, how it is different from open collector?

what is totempole output how it is differ from open colector

i cannot understand what is totem pole output. what is the difference between totem pole output and open collector output ?

i bought a mpg (manual pulse generator for cnc lathe) in that it is written the outputs are totempole. i am giving only single 5v power supply +5v and gnd .

A totem pole output can drive both a high and low logic level on the output. An open collector output can only drive the output low and a pull up is required to have a high logic level.

FYI. a totem pole output is used where only one driver exists for a signal. An open collector output can be used when multiple drivers may exist and you need a wired-AND (e.g. interrupt outputs are usually open-collector/open-drain outputs, so multiple devices can drive the active low interrupt).
