Hello, could someone please give me an explanation of what a filter's time response is.
Is it simply the time time is takes for a filter to implement it's filtering ?
All filters delay the signal passing through it. Group delay is a parameter that specifies the by frequency segmented time delay through the filter. Group delay is the rate of change of the phase transfer function. (a linear phase change vs. freq equals constant group delay). Low group delay variation filters are sometimes referred as linear phase filters.
Low group delay variance has become more important for high data rate digital modulation schemes to prevent distortion of the signal.
Attached is a graph of a two pole crystal filter amplitude and group delay response.
