i heard something about it related to aircrafts and just am curious about it

Try 'googling' "5 Tube superheterodyne receiver"

I am hetero myself, and I built one back in 1962.

(Who woulda thunk that 'google would become a verb!)

I'll bet if we started a company that used "Heterodyne" and went public,
we could make millions of dollars if we made it Gonzo enough.

very very important concept in commn receiver..
hetero= different signals: dyne= mixing..... so. in starting point of any reciever, different signal (one is received signal and other is local oscillator signal) are mixed up ..the output consists of sum and difference frequencies....that different freq(also called as intermediate frequencies 455MHZ for AM ,10 MHZ for FM) will be used for further processing..
ie wahtever may frequency of input signal ,it will dowm converted to a single common frequecy..now circuit is having only one frequency..


whereas opposite method is homodyning here no down converting or upconverting..so in input side of receiver ,different freq. will come ..circuit will malfunction if signal frq changes oftenly

heterodyning means mixing of two signals

let us take a example

two signals A and B

the heterodyning of these signals may be

A+B, A-B, A or B

there are some rules regarding these the A+B will be shown by the erect triangle and the A-b will be shown by the inverted trianngle

kumar has done a great job in telling the same answer but he missed these that i have told u and the rest is same any questions leme know or kumar :)

for what i said..in my last post in this section......
actually we are using heterodyning method under the superheterodynr receiver
homodyning method under the name "tuned radio frequency receiver"
as i said the problem associated with homodyning method , presence of different freq.oftenly .so this pose a condition that circuit has to face new freq. oftenly which will affect its performance....
the problem associated with Heterodyning is something called "image signal "
