Re: What is GIS?

GIS are a particular class of database softwares dedicated to the management of geographical information. In particular they are used to correlate geographical data (e.g. aerial/satellite photos, maps, coordinates, altitude) and other types of information such as population density, soil classification and so on.
They are widely used by public administration to manage the territory and by private companies to optimize resources distribution across wide areas (e.g by TLC co. for cell planning and to support the deployment and management of base stations network) and in general by those who have the necessity to merge pure geographical data with other type of information.
