Types of Oscillators

If we should go about categorising oscillators how many categories will be there?

Ring Oscillators - which depend on the inversion of the stage to cause the oscillation, and on each stage's propagation delay for the frequency

Relaxation Oscillators - which depend on chargins and discharging a node to get the delay and one inversion to get the oscillation

What else?

Re: Types of Oscillators

Hi,

If you provide positive feedback (i.e. on positive terminal of op-amp) in operational amplifier, then it works as an oscillator as well.

Re: Types of Oscillators

Yes that is normally a relaxation oscillator since it is based on charging/discharging a capacitor. There are phase shift oscillators based on opamps
Some other types of oscillators are: (correct me if I am wrong..)
LC Oscillators (By utilizing some negative resistance circuit to build LC tank oscillations) (e.g. Colpitts? Hartley?)
Then there are Phase Shift Oscillators, which provide a phase shift of 360 in the loop at a particular frequency to generate oscillations at that frequency. (e.g. Wein Bridge Oscillator)

Then I have heard of emitter coupled oscillator, does it lie in any of the above categories? What is its principle of functioning?

Re: Types of Oscillators

oscillators are 2 types..
1.sinusoidal
2 .non sinusoidal
Colpitts and hartley all are sinusoidal osci which r based on bharkausen criterion
Relaxation ,ring osci. are non sinusoidal..
