What are the benefits of using different sizes of capacitors besides size? ie. 0402 0805, etc...

Re: capacitor footprints

Lower inductance with smaller footprints? Does that apply for series resistance and inductors as well?

capacitor footprints

Well, let me expand a little bit. The contacts of the 0402 are smaller and therefore the series inductance of the capacitor is a little smaller. Moreover, you can place the 0402 closer to the chip, improving the decoupling effect. The cons are that you can't really have big capacitance values.
Inductors (and resistors) are almost the same but can generally carry less current.

Re: capacitor footprints

thank you for the replies. Are there any benefits to using tantalum caps over ceramic caps?

Re: capacitor footprints

Very big and interesting question. Check here, for example.
