Hi,

can anyone tell me what are ESD cells and what for they are used in physical design?

ESD Cells, Normally used to protect the the chip's internal circuit by static discharge from external world.

they are added along with I/O's.

ESD cells are diodes placed in I/O such that at any point in time, the input shall not cross above VDD.

Hi Pieter1,

Nice one..Both the white papers are a pretty good read

cheers

ESD cells not necessarily be on the pads, It can be in the core as well. ESD serves very good purpose when the technologis sizes are decreasing.
Attached can give more information.
