A GPS IC includes RF and Digital IC to implement RF receiver, A/D, Correlator functions. The map, GUI are implmented in a separated MCU.

Re: What a GPS receiver by hardware/software point of view??

There are different type GPS receiver. software, hardware and mix.
FOr the software gps, only RF->IF is hardware. Then all the others are run in MCU/CPU, including correlation, tracking loop, PVT, navigation, MAP.
For the hardware gps, RF-IF-correltation-tracking loop is the hardware. the others run on the MCU/CUP.
and the mixed GPS, RF-IF-correlation is hardware, the others softeware.
