WD Passport 250GB

I'm trying to use a WD Passport 250GB and it is not visible.
How can I get Windows XP to recognize the drive?
Do I need a special driver for it?
My friend plugged it to his computer and it worked fine.
What's going on???????

Re: WD Passport 250GB

If you think it's a driver problem - it's not, as many found out after much frustration ..
IT'S POWER PROBLEM ..
Get a shorter USB cable, or a power cable, and the problem disappears, confusing, eh!

The WD Passport hd requires a little over 1000mA of power at spin up, most computer systems only supply 500mA of power through USB ports ..

Re: WD Passport 250GB

I don't understand how this short cable should work for me, in fact it doesn't.
What else can be the problem?

Re: WD Passport 250GB

If it works with one computer has to work with others ..
Try different USB ports, in addition, some unconnected ports are also (usually) present on the motherboard ..

Re: WD Passport 250GB

WD also offers a special cable for the Passport that draws power from two USB ports simultaneously in order to overcome the 500 mA limit.

Not sure if that requires some kind of driver though since both ports would have to be configured for full power.

Re: WD Passport 250GB

Although it would be probably be not the case but first generation of Intel's chipset that supported USB2.0 had some issues, again related to power.
