Should I join research on vlsi or Industry for job what is best

VLSI is so '80s.

What is "best"? Intellectual challenge /
entertainment, job security, paycheck,
advancement?

Realize the "industry", for every sweet
design job, pigeonholes many more
engineers into supporting roles that they
really do not enjoy. Your abilities and your
self-salesmanship matter a lot, to "the fit"
as perceived and as executed.

Do you think you're cut out to be a
"researcher"? On what would you base
such a claim? There's a lot besides the
research that you will be expected to do -
starting with, as you advance, spending
more and more time on finding the next
grant.

Do you think you're "an inventor"? That's a
key quality for a designer. Who can you
convince that this is your strength, how?

Perhaps "any job is better than no job" and
you really want to get in the door someplace
that holds interest, and attempt to "move
toward the light" once there. The more rigid
your role demand, the more you must be
prepared to "sell it".

In my distant "fresher" day I stuck to my
interest in chip design and outwaited some
less interesting offers for roles at the same
company. Ended up getting in, with a group
that did "less popular" products, but still was
full time IC design work. Moved later, toward
my core interest (which also evolved in the
mean time) by demonstrating ability and
interest, helping out "adjacent" groups and
getting more "friends" who would pull me
organizationally toward things I liked and
was good for.

It depends on where you live. You have to see which has more job opportunities. If there are lots of semiconductor manufacturing and fabrication companies where you live, VLSI will be prospective. If not, go for the other options.
