Verilog: Function or Genvar?

I am writing a verilog code to find the absolute values of my inputs and some mathematical calculation. This has to be implemented in a FOR loop. I just wonder if I should model the absolute as a function or just using genvar? Also, does function in verilog synthezisable? Which was is more efficient?
