hi,

If you have a diode placed in the positive supply input, no damage. If you didnt, loading can occur.

The track of PCB will be damaged if the power supply is DC battery.
If it is transformer and power regulator, either fuse or power regulator IC will blow of.

When power source is grounded directly, because source sees virtually no resistance, heavy current flows through the path damaging power source and/or path.

Can anyone put more light on this?

I dont think there is any effect of connecting the ground of supply to +ve of the board.

if we see normally the condition you have given then there will be a "dead short".
