what is this new talk abt using optical interconnects inted of metal layers/interconnects?

is this possible.. theoritaclly speakin therw wudnt be any delay and wud be much lesser heat dissipated.. but how is the fab. possible..!

Re: optical interconnects?

optical I/C is about replacing metal i/c to reduce skew, power and jitter. it is about fabrication microphotnic structure within chip using silicon materials.

currently, Intel R&D with Univeristy of Surrey has done a lot in this and it is likely to be success in near future from the results they got...

at https://www.intel.com/technology/silicon/sp/ ..u can find more info as well as video
