using GSM modem to send SMS of data received from Gas Sensors

Dear all,
I am a student doing my final project using GSM modem to send SMS of data received from Gas Sensors. The microcontroller used is atmega128 and GSM modem used is Wavecom. SMS part is not working properly. Can someone help on how the modem GSM is interconnected to Atmega128 serial port DB9?
I am using C language and can I have commands to be used for sending SMS?
