I've looked through all the pdf's from MicroChip and searched the related threads and I'm still not sure if I can use an MPLAB ICD2 for in-circuit serial programming my PIC16F877a as long as I isolate the RB6 & 7 and build an RC circuit for MCLR. Does the 13v come from the programmer? Here's the circuit I'm assuming I have to build.

IS mplab SOFTWARE detect ICD2 when u connect to PC. Also why u check 13V if s/w detect ICD2 then directly program IC

If I understand your question alright, yes, the MPLAB detects the ICD2 and I guess it does supply the 13volts if it is using the high voltage programming now that I think about it.

ICD2 and ICD3 are Programmer as well as Debuggers. PicKit2 and Pickit3 are a limited debuggers but full support for Programmers

I was digging through some boxes and found the cable that goes from a phone jack to the sip pin so I think you can use it for ICSP. One way to find out for sure...
