Using a Power supply to charge a dead battery?

Can I charge a dead 9volt, AAA, AA, D cell batteries using an external power supply?

What type of batteries can i do this too and what type of batteries can I not be able?

Theoreticaly, it is not possible, but I have heard that if you use raw (unsmoothed) DC, some batteries can be usefully recharged. Beware the batteries could explode.
