You can use a flat panckake spiral coil with a thin copper diaphram. Discharge a capacitor (0.1J to 100KJ) capacitor and you will have a nice short half sinusoidal pulse. Use a gated receiver looking for a single pulse return. You can get very good detail. I once made one about 10cm in dia with about 1000J capacitor, it would kill a gold fish with one pulse.
