Hi, I want to program PIC18F4520.
I am using PIC Kit 3. I am using MPLAB X IDE and XC8 compiler.

I have tried the programing by:
1. Giving PIC kit power.
2. Giving external power.
3. Using 1k - 10k resistor at MCLR pin.

I think, that it may be a issue of configuration.

Here is the configuration:
Code:
/*
* File:   configBits.h
* Author: LENOVO
*
* Created on 21 October, 2020, 1:37 PM
*/

#ifndef CONFIGBITS_H
#define    CONFIGBITS_H

// PIC18F4520 Configuration Bit Settings

// 'C' source line config statements
#define ON  1
#define OFF 0
// CONFIG1H
#pragma config OSC = HS // Oscillator Selection bits (HS oscillator)
#pragma config FCMEN = OFF // Fail-Safe Clock Monitor Enable bit (Fail-Safe Clock Monitor disabled)
#pragma config IESO = OFF // Internal/External Oscillator Switchover bit (Oscillator Switchover mode disabled)

// CONFIG7H
#pragma config EBTRB = OFF // Boot Block Table Read Protection bit (Boot block (000000-0007FFh) not protected from table reads executed in other blocks)

// #pragma config statements should precede project file includes.
// Use project enums instead of #define for ON and OFF.

#include <xc.h>

#define _XTAL_FREQ 10000000

#endif

Programming...

The following memory area(s) will be programmed:
program memory: start address = 0x0, end address = 0x7fff
program memory
Address: 0 Expected Value: 50 Received Value: 0
configuration memory
EEData memory
User Id Memory
Failed to program device

I suspect the reason is the program is zero bytes long!
There is no program code in it at all, only configuration bits.

Brian.

Can't understand, what you mean. Zero byte long as in ?

Well, all the code you have shown is to set the configuration bits and it is probably doing that correctly. The configuration bits are not in program memory space.

There is no actual code to compile so it is probably correct in saying it can't put it into the program memory.

Try adding a short 'main()' function with a few lines of code in it and see what it does.

Brian.

Also DO NOT define ON and OFF.
For one thing, the 'off' config settings usually have the bit set a '1' (the config settings are all defined in the data sheet and erase to '1' as the default settings).
However I don't think the XC8 compiler actually does text substitution on the #pragma lines (although I could be wrong which makes your defining ON and OF even more of a no-no) so you are probably getting away with it.
I generally recommend that you put the CONFIG pragma lines in the 'main.c' file. That way they are only ever specified once and you don't need to put a conditional around them.
Further, the 'xc.h' include should be in all of the .c files so that the register definitions are available.
Susan

Thanks. Configuration bits solve the problem.
