Is it possible to connect the DC output of power supplies in series like with batteries to achieve the right voltage e.g. three identical 220vAC/12vDC power supplies to get 36v output?

The answer is yes, and the output current will be determined by the "smallest" unit ..

IanP is correct but I would add that the outputs must be isolated from all inputs, including Earth or ground connections. It is also advisable to connect a power diode in non-coducting mode across the outputs of each supply source. This is to help to protect them if the output is shorted, without the diodes it may be possible to feed a higher voltage from the other supplies into the output of the PSU and damage it.
