I am trying to make a small step down converter (220v AC to 5V DC) for i need a transformer.
I got some transformer from my store room which were mounted and soldered on some of the scrap PCB boards, but i am confused what are this called and can i use this type of transformer with 2 capacitors to convert 220v AC to 5v DC.(image attached).
and also how can i calculate the rating of the transformer as it is nothing written on it. how can i know where is the input and output pin. as some has 6 pin and some has 8 pin
Hi these are ferrite core transformers that are used in switching mode power supplies.
you cannot use them as 50Hz transformer, they are designed to be used in high frequency switching mode supplies with a switch controller IC
they are designed for specific circuit and not general ,
forget about them!
Use a 230V to 9V step-down transformer and use a bridge rectifier at the output side of the transformer. use 1000uF 25V and 100nF 50V and then use a LM7805 and then at the output of LM7805 use another 1000 uF 10V and 100nF 16V MLCC.
As already mentioned the transformers you have shown are switching transformers and they are used in switching power supplies and you cannot use them. They are ferrite core trfs and you need a iron core trf.
