The sequence of colors follows the rainbow colors sequence (light spectre):

Red (2)
Orange (3)
Yellow (4)
Green (5)
Blue (6)
Violet (7)

The remaining digits use non spectre colors:
Black (0)
Brown (1)
Grey ( 8 )
White (9)

At first it used to be that the values of resistors were written on the them. Then it was found that using a color code such as the one currently used might be of help. In this way the code was generated.
I have some devices made in1950s which have resistors with their value written on them!

Hi
As the industry of resistors advanced and the size of a resistor became smaller it was difficult to read it without a magnifier and also so iy was easy to use colour code.
