MIPS - simply gives how many millions of instructions carry out in a second.
Can you use this to compare every types of processors ? If yes, we assume that every processor do same amount of work in a single instruction.
Processors are adhere to different types of instruction sets. (read about RISC, CISC) Hence amount of work done in one instruction differs.
What we need to know is amount of work that can be done within a second. (not the amount of instructions)
DMIPS - Is a benchmark counter that consider the amount of work done in a second. That "work" is the work done by software most commonly when they execute. Hence this is more fare measurement for comparison.
