the best fpga device for my project??

i'm elx eng. student. i'm begineer to fpga...i know vhdl language and can program 8051. I want to do my 4th year final year project of fpga...involving communication area.
plz tell me which fpga device should i buy so that it doesn't hurt my pocket too much and also my project would work on that fpga. I search fpga device in web..i found many of them...altera,xilinx,altium...i'm confused which one of them is better bcoz they list out so many featuer that i donot understand.

plz help me in doin my 4th yr project

What's your project? What features do you need?

See if the Xilinx "High Volume Starter Kit Bundle" starter kit fits you needs. It's only $99 US, and it includes a Spartan-3 board (made by Digilent), disks, manuals, download cable, and even a CPLD kit. You can buy plug-in "accessory boards" directly from Digilent. You can also buy the same Spartan-3 board from Digilent -- you get fewer bundled goodies, but you can get an optional larger FPGA.
